Emissions from transport are a major source of air pollution in Asia. Reducing these emissions requires an integrated strategy comprising of: clean fuels, inspection and maintenance, emission standards, and transport planning and demand management.
Clear, time-bound roadmaps developed regionally and nationally “to reduce sulphur in vehicle fuels to 50 ppm or below worldwide, concurrent with clean vehicles and clean vehicles technologies” are needed [Fourth Global Partnership Meeting of Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV), December 2005, Nairobi].
The objective of the project is to develop work plans for introducing more stringent fuel quality and vehicle emissions standards in Pakistan, Philippines and Vietnam.
Workshops with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, oil/fuel companies, OEMs, NGOs, and academic and other institutions were organized to develop a national roadmap for clean fuels and vehicles, specifically focusing on the introduction of Euro 4 vehicles and fuel.

Policy Briefs on Clean Fuels and Vehicles
CAI-Asia has identified a number of basic questions on fuels and vehicles that regularly arise in discussions with policy makers. There is a pressing need for a document that provides answers to these questions, so that policy makers are guided by clear and accurate information. Drawing from its experience in promoting cleaner fuels and vehicles, CAIAsia will prepare policy briefs for policy makers to support their efforts towards cleaner fuels and vehicles.
CAI-Asia also collected fuels, vehicles and automotive fuel efficiency data in 29 countries to provide information to policymakers and researchers on fuel quality specifications.
